FOUNDATION
A good foundation does more than just not letting your home to sink into the ground. Additionally, it keeps out the moisture, insulates from the cold, and resists movement of the earth round it.

A quality foundation requires a lot more than simply digging a hole and pouring some concrete into molds.
It must be tailored to make it perfect fit for your future home, taking into consideration soil conditions, water tables, even the quality of the back-fill.

And as with a custom project, every detail must be ideally chosen: the base properly compacted, the form-work set up right, the concrete free of voids. Neglect even one of them, and the most carefully poured foundation can fail.

How Foundations Can Fail

  • Nonporous backfill. Soils loaded with clay or organic matter hold water like a sponge, raising the probability of foundation cracks once the soil freezes and expands in cold Ontario winters
  • Rushing the cure. Concrete must cure gradually to reach proper strength (usually 3,000 psi or above). Keep it moist for at least three days by wrapping it in plastic, misting with water, and other techniques.
  • Insufficient compacting. If the slab is poured over crushed stone that hasn't been firmly tamped, it will likely settle or crack.
  • Interrupting the pour. A concrete form has be filled in 1 go. If you stop and return the next day to complete pouring, there will be a "cold joint" between the fresh concrete and yesterday's work, which is likely to crack and leak.
